Neither vehicle was able to be driven after the crash. Police said the driver of car gamethe Explorer ran away from the scene and could not be located. The officer suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

An investigation showed that the Explorer had been stolNorthwest Herald/car gameen out of Lake Zurich and that Nelson was the driver of the Explorer during the incident, police said in a news release.

While on Glenbrook Road, the Explorer entered a cul de sac. When the pursuing squad car stopped, the driver of the Explorer rammed it head-on, police said.

Nelson surrendered to Crystal Lake police on Thursday. His bond was set at $60,000. His next court date is Dec. 14. He faces up to seven years in prison on the most serious charges.

The driver of the Explorer did not stop, instead traveling east on Route 176, north on Terra Cotta Road, and then entering a subdivision.

According to police, about 4:39 a.m. Dec. 1, a Crystal Lake police officer tried to stop a black 1998 Ford Explorer after seeing it going about 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.
